4 Tips For Choosing Wire Loom

Posted by Lauren on Sep 29, 2016 11:00:00 AM

Protecting your wire is important, and choosing the right type of wire loom can have a big impact on the level of protection and look of the install. To make sure you get what you need, here's a few tips when choosing wire loom for your build.

1. Consider design.

It's important to know if the loom will need to be threaded over the cables/wires or if simply wrapping it around wires is feasible. Wire loom options may be split, non-split, spiral wrap, or self-wrapping. If the wires need to be accessed on a regular basis, split loom will most likely be preferred.

2. Size it right.

Don't buy sleeving that is too small or too large to fit on your application. Carefully measure your wire bundle diameter and choose wire loom that is just slightly larger than the measurement taken.

3. Evaluate material.

Depending on the environment, there are numerous materials to choose from that offer protection against a variety of elements such as moisture, chemicals, vibration, heat, etc. Some loom material options include PET (Polyethylene Terepthalate), woven mesh, fiberglass, heat shrink fabric, asphalt coated cloth, nylon, metal, and stainless steel.

4. Check temperature.

Make sure the loom you choose will withstand the temperatures it will encounter. While a wide variety of options are available across the types of loom, Flame Retardant Split Loom and High Temperature Fiberglass Sleeving are great options for high temperature applications.
